The Czech Statistical Office published models of the anticipated labour market trends in the Czech Republic until 2050. It notes that the demographic development clearly shows that the labour market will be influenced by a significant decrease in the number of working-age people.
The CSO press release from 15th November 2012 concludes that the proportion of people aged 15 to 64 years is to decline from the last year's more than 70% to 55.4% in 2050. On the other hand, the proportion of people aged over 65 will increase from the last year's 15.5% to almost 32% in 2050. The share of young people will drop from the last year's 14.4% to 12.7% in 2050. While maintaining the current level of employment, the proportion of employed people will fall to 37.8% of the total population by 2050. In 2011, this proportion was 46.6%.
The main problem with the current labour market is the very limited amount of flexible jobs, particularly the part-time ones. The pivotal role in the future of labour will, however, be played by three groups: students, mothers with children and the elderly. Without active involvement of these groups, a continuous decline in employment will follow. This can be achieved only by a significant reinforcement of part-time jobs. A central role in this will be played not only by employers but also by the state.
