How to deal with a lazy and unproductive subordinate

Every manager would like all their subordinates to be highly motivated and productive. However, this is not a given. Nor is the solution always simply to fire people. Either it may be difficult to find a new replacement for them or, for example, the employee has always worked dutifully in the past, but now their motivation and productivity are lagging.
